Breed characteristics
About the breed
Overview
The Poodle is an elegant, active and exceptionally intelligent dog with a distinctive curly coat. The breed comes in several size varieties, ranging from Toy Poodles to large Standard Poodles. Despite the difference in size, Poodles typically share a lively temperament, a strong attachment to people and excellent trainability.
According to Petsi, adult height is roughly 24–60 cm, while weight varies greatly by size: males may weigh about 2–30 kg and females about 2–26 kg. The coat is medium in length, dense and curly, with common colours including black, white, brown, silver, apricot and red.
Origin
Petsi lists France as the breed country. The Poodle's history is also linked to European water dogs and an earlier working role around water. The breed later became especially popular in France, where selective breeding also helped establish smaller companion varieties.
Health
Typical life expectancy is around 12–15 years. Poodles may be predisposed to certain eye, joint, endocrine and ear conditions. Responsible breeding, weight management, regular veterinary checks and preventive care are important for reducing risks and supporting long-term wellbeing.
Temperament and behavior
Temperament
The Poodle is friendly, strongly people-oriented and eager to be involved in family life. It is energetic and playful and benefits from both physical exercise and mental challenges. Excellent memory and quick learning make Poodles highly responsive to commands, tricks and dog sports.
With appropriate socialisation, they usually do well with children and can live peacefully with other pets. Poodles are sensitive to tone of voice and respond best to calm, reward-based training. Long periods of isolation and repetitive routines are less suitable than regular interaction, play and shared activities.
Care and keeping
Care
The Poodle's curly coat sheds very little, but it keeps growing and is prone to tangles. Brushing several times a week is advisable, with more frequent grooming for longer coats. Professional or home maintenance trimming is typically needed about every 4–6 weeks. After bathing, the coat should be dried thoroughly while being brushed.
Ears, eyes and teeth need regular attention. Poodles also require daily walks, play, training and problem-solving activities. Food portions should be adjusted to the dog's size variety, age and activity level, with regular weight monitoring.
