Breed characteristics
About the breed
Overview
The Lipizzan is a compact, muscular and expressive breed closely associated with classical riding. Petsi lists a height of 155–165 cm and a weight of 500–600 kg. Most adults are grey.
History
The breed takes its name from Lipica in present-day Slovenia, where a court stud was founded in 1580. Spanish, Neapolitan, Barb and later Arabian lines contributed to its development.
Use
Lipizzans are famous for the Spanish Riding School in Vienna and advanced haute-école movements. They are also used in parades, shows and driving.
Temperament and behavior
Temperament
The breed is intelligent, obedient and capable of strong concentration. Lipizzans mature relatively late, so advanced work should be introduced progressively.
Care and keeping
Care
Regular movement, weight, hoof and dental monitoring, good hay and constant water are important. Haute-école training requires gradual strength development and adequate recovery.
