About the breed

Overview

The Kiger Mustang is a compact, muscular horse of the American West with noticeable Iberian characteristics. Petsi lists a height of 135–150 cm and a weight of 350–450 kg. Primitive colours and a dark dorsal stripe are common.

History

A distinct population was identified in Oregon in 1977 during a wild-horse census. Managed areas were established to preserve its characteristic type while population numbers are controlled by US authorities.

Use

After careful socialisation, Kiger Mustangs are used for riding, tourism, western disciplines, ranch work and rare-breed exhibitions.

Temperament

Kiger Mustangs are intelligent, cautious and independent. They can learn well, but trust develops gradually and harsh handling can make later training more difficult.

Care

These horses are adapted to modest conditions and do not need excessive concentrates. Good forage, water, movement, routine hoof and dental care and gradual adaptation to new routines are important.
