Breed characteristics
About the breed
Overview
The Friesian is one of Europe's most recognisable horse breeds. Typical features include an exclusively black coat, abundant mane and tail, feathered lower legs, elevated neck carriage and expressive trot. Petsi lists a height of 152–175 cm and a weight of 540–650 kg.
History
The breed developed in Friesland in the northern Netherlands. Friesians served for centuries as military, ceremonial and driving horses. After serious population declines, organised breeding programmes preserved the breed.
Use
Today Friesians are used in classical driving, dressage, shows, parades, historical displays, film work and leisure riding.
Temperament and behavior
Temperament
Friesians are generally balanced, people-oriented and trainable while retaining a lively character. They are sensitive to handling and tend to respond best to calm, consistent training.
Care and keeping
Care
The long mane, tail and feathering need regular grooming and skin checks, especially in wet conditions. Their substantial build makes joint, hoof and body-condition monitoring important, together with regular turnout and feeding matched to workload.
