Breed history
Siberians are regarded as an ancient natural breed of Russia, with references to similar cats extending back many centuries. The modern standard took shape during the 1980s, and exports increased in the 1990s. International popularity grew through the combination of a striking appearance and a family-friendly nature.
Appearance and features
This is a sturdy, rounded and highly athletic cat with large paws, a broad head, big eyes, tufted ears and a rich neck ruff. The dense seasonal coat protects against cold and may occur in almost any colour. Full physical maturity can take four to five years.
Temperament
The Siberian is intelligent, social and fond of interactive play. Many greet their people at the door, follow them around the home, respond to their name and learn household rules readily.
Care and lifestyle
Brush weekly under normal conditions and daily or every other day during spring and autumn shedding. Trim claws as needed, inspect ears weekly and maintain regular dental care.
Health
The breed is usually robust, but hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and pyruvate kinase deficiency may occur. Genetic screening and cardiac checks are important for breeding animals.
Best suited for
The Siberian suits families with children, active owners and homes with a friendly dog. Owners must be prepared for a substantial coat and especially heavy seasonal shedding.
