About the breed
The Selkirk Rex is a sturdy cat with a plush curly coat, calm devotion to its family and high tolerance of children and other pets.
Breed history
The breed began with a curly-coated shelter cat named Miss DePesto, found in Montana in 1987. Breeder Jeri Newman established that the curl gene was dominant and developed the line with Persian, Exotic and British cats. The breed was named after her stepfather.
Appearance and features
The Selkirk Rex has heavy bone, a compact body, relatively short legs, a rounded head and a dense coat with pronounced curls. Both short-haired and long-haired varieties exist, and almost every colour and pattern is accepted.
Temperament
This is a good-natured, gentle and strongly family-oriented cat. It enjoys affection and quiet time beside people, while younger cats still play readily. It is usually welcoming to visitors and patient with children.
Care and lifestyle
Gently separate and comb the curls at least weekly without pulling them straight with a harsh brush. Trim claws twice monthly, inspect ears regularly and brush teeth several times a week.
Health
The coat mutation itself is not considered a disease, but lines may carry health issues associated with ancestral breeds. Screening breeding cats for heart, kidney and hip problems is advisable.
Best suited for
The breed suits families with children and pets, as well as anyone wanting a calm affectionate companion. The owner’s main responsibility is consistent care of the curly coat.
