About the breed
The Russian Blue is an elegant short-haired cat with a silver-blue coat, green eyes and a calm, observant personality.
Breed history
The breed is associated with northern Russia and the old name “Archangel Cat”. It was shown in England during the nineteenth century. After the Second World War the population was rebuilt with British and Siamese lines, after which breeders restored the dense coat and refined silhouette.
Appearance and features
The body is slender, strong and elongated, with long legs and a wedge-shaped head. Its defining features are a plush double coat with a silver sheen and vivid green eyes. Solid blue is the classic colour, although some registries also accept white and black.
Temperament
This is an intelligent, sensitive cat that bonds deeply with its family but may choose not to greet every visitor. It enjoys a predictable routine, hunting-style play and quiet periods on its own.
Care and lifestyle
Weekly brushing is enough for the short coat. Inspect ears and eyes several times a week, trim claws as needed and establish regular dental care.
Health
Russian Blues are generally healthy, although owners should watch urinary health, eyesight and body weight. Good nutrition, ample water and preventive veterinary visits reduce risk.
Best suited for
The breed suits apartment living, calm households and people who value quiet affection. It can live with children and other pets when introductions are handled properly.
