Breed history

The breed was started by Paul Arnold Casey in the 1970s as a domestic cat resembling a leopard. Several breeds and spotted cats from Asia and Africa were used.

Appearance and features

It is a muscular cat with long slender legs, a wedge-shaped face, slightly larger ears, a long tail and short spotted coat. Size: medium size. Weight: males: 5.5–8 kg, females: 4–6 kg. Coat: short-haired. Typical colours: golden, snow leopard pattern with black spots and tabby.

Temperament

California Spangled Cats are energetic, friendly and clever. They need play, movement and human involvement, otherwise their energy may turn destructive.

Care and lifestyle

The short coat needs brushing about weekly. Active play, climbing options, ear, eye and tooth care and regular claw trimming are important.
