Breed characteristics
About the breed
The Alaskan Malamute is an ancient northern sled dog built for heavy work in cold weather, snow and long distances. It is not primarily a racing dog; its strength is endurance, power and steady pulling ability.
The breed is connected with the native peoples of Alaska. These dogs helped move loads, accompanied people in harsh conditions and became part of everyday life.
Appearance
The Malamute is a large, powerful dog with a broad chest, strong legs, upright ears and a dense double coat. Its build clearly reflects its working purpose.
Best owner
This breed suits active people who enjoy long walks, hikes and outdoor life. It needs exercise, space and close contact with people.
Temperament and behavior
The Malamute is friendly, social and often very affectionate with people. It is not a classic guard dog and may greet visitors with curiosity rather than suspicion.
At the same time, it is independent and can be stubborn. Training should be calm, consistent and started early.
The breed has a high energy level and loves movement, snow, digging and shared activity. With children it is usually kind, but supervision is important because of its size and strength.
Care and keeping
Coat care is central. The dense double coat protects the dog from cold and heat, so shaving or short clipping is not recommended.
Brush several times a week, and much more often during shedding. The breed needs long walks and controlled exercise, while excess weight should be avoided to protect the joints.
